OFFICIALS on the Indonesian island of Bali are considering putting up "no sex" signs at Hindu temples after a lusty Estonian couple were caught in the act.
Police took Urmas Silman, 43, and Katrin Silman, 32, in for questioning after they were found by youth leaders who had gone to check up on repairs at the temple in the village of Saraseda, which is located in the Tampaksiring subdistrict of Gianyar, The Jakarta Post reported.
"They said they really did not know that sex at temples was prohibited in Bali, so we just let them go and left it up to the village heads to decide how to handle the case," said Gianyar district police chief Hadi Purnomo today.
"In the end, the village decided they wanted to hold a cleansing ceremony and ordered the couple to pay 20 million rupiah ($2,000) to fund the ritual."
The couple admitted they had also used the temple's sacred water fountain before having sex, Purnomo said, and apologised.
Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardana Sukawati, the chairman of the Bali chapter of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association, said the incident highlighted the need for a campaign educating tourists on the proper conduct when inside temple compounds.
"The prohibition on engaging in sex inside temples should be specifically added to existing notice boards. Hopefully there will be no more incidents like this in the future," Ardana told the Jakarta Post.
