THREE federal police officers were shot and killed overnight when they tried to arrest drug trafficking suspects at Mexico City's international airport.

Airport spokesman Jorge Andres Gomez said the incident took place around 8:50 am (local time) in the fast-food area of the airport's Terminal 2. The identity and location of the suspects was not immediately clear.

"Finding themselves surrounded," the alleged traffickers "opened fire with their weapons against the federal police," the Public Security ministry said.

Two federal police officers died at the airport while another died of wounds in the hospital.

Federal and local police cordoned off the area and used airport signs to cover the food court windows.

People at the busy airport area hit the ground and rushed to hide in the bathrooms when the shooting broke out. At least 14 shots were fired, Milenio TV reported.

Some witnesses said that police officers had fired on their colleagues. But at least one witness contradicted that report.

"We threw ourselves on the ground - there were four civilians shooting at the police," a female witness who refused to give her name told radio Formato21.

Another female witness said it took five to 10 minutes for police reinforcements to arrive.

The Ministry of Communications and Transportation issued a brief statement denouncing the "quarrel in an area of open access" of the airport's Terminal 2.

Airline operations "are carrying on normally and this situation does not in any way affect operations," the note said, omitting references to any people killed.

Police patrols have increased across the country ahead of Sunday's presidential election.

Charged: 'Man drove car at police officer'

A MAN has been charged following a police chase in the early hours of this morning where a police officer was almost run over.

Officers in the newly-formed Vehicle Crime Unit charged the 20-year-old Bassendean man, alleging at 2am today he evaded police when they tried stopping him on Guildford Road, Maylands.

The police helicopter had to be used to find the Holden Commodore, which was stopped at West Road in Bassendean.

It will be alleged that while police tried to stop the man, he accelerated towards an officer, forcing him to jump out of the way.

The man has been charged with aggravated reckless driving, failing to stop, possession of illicit drugs, doing an act likely to endanger life and driving with a blood alcohol reading in excess of 0.05.

He will appear in the Perth Magistrates Court on April 12.

 

Car hits power pole in Success

WESTERN Power have been called to a crash in Success after a car hit a light pole taking down power lines this morning.

The crash happened just before 7am at Hammond Road and Carmel Way.

Only the driver was injured, and St John Ambulance were also called to attend the scene.

Drivers are reminded during the Easter long weekend, double demerit points apply until 11.59pm on Monday April 1.

FIVE police dogs have bailed up seven suspects in a busy night of crime where the Canine Squad came out a clear winner.

In the first of four incidents, police dog Gypsy tracked down three people after a stolen car chase at Noranda, finding a 24-year-old man hiding in a carport.

Police dog Ego joined the hunt and found the remaining two suspects, a man and a woman, both 22, hiding in dense bushland.

All three were charged with car theft, while the 24-year-old man also faces several other charges.

At Bassendean, police dog Freddie stopped offenders who had abandoned a stolen vehicle and hid in the grounds of a home.

At Beresford, after a pursuit, police dog Bear found a 15-year-old boy hiding in the front yard of a home.

And at Jandakot, police dog Vector chased a 25-year-old man through bushland for more than 1km after he threatened a woman with garden shears.

MOTORISTS are reminded Alfred Road in Swanbourne remains closed today while police continue to investigate the murder of David Liam Johnson, whose body was found in a nearby park about two weeks ago.

Mr Johnson's body was found in a nearby park early Saturday morning nearly two weeks ago.

The road is closed in both directions from West Coast Highway to Narla Road.

It is expected to remain closed till 6am Friday and drivers are advised to seek an alternative route.

Traffic is open to parents who are taking children to and from Swanbourne Primary School today.

Crash closes Shelley Bridge lane

A single vehicle crash on Shelley Bridge, Leach Highway in Shelley, eastbound, has reduced traffic to one lane with the car blocking the right lane.

Emergency services are on site and traffic is busy approaching the incident.

POSSIBLE links between a 17-year-old girl who was injured and a man who was fatally bashed in Mandurah on Sunday night are being investigated by police.

A 28-year-old man was found in a car park on Pinjarra Road with severe head injuries and later died.

The teenager was found nearby with serious, but not life-threatening injuries.

Major Crime Squad detectives, who have obtained security footage from the area, are now trying to establish whether there was any link between the pair.

Media reports suggest the man was set upon while trying to come to the aid of the girl, who he did not know, and was being attacked.

The teenage girl is in Royal Perth Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Late Sunday police were called to a business on Pinjarra Road near George Street about 8.20pm.

Officers found the wounded man, who was taken by ambulance to hospital but later died of his injuries.

A forensics team remained at the scene for much of yesterday and road closures have been put in place.

MAJOR Crime Squad detectives are investigating the suspicious death of a 28-year-old man found with fatal head injuries in a Mandurah car park overnight.

Police were called to a business on Pinjarra Road near George Street about 8.20pm yesterday.

Officers found the wounded man, who was taken by ambulance to hospital but later died of his injuries.

A forensics team is still at the scene and road closures have been put in place.

Pinjarra Road is closed to all traffic from Sutton Street to Boundary Road in Mandurah, traffic management is on site and drivers are asked to avoid the area and find alternative routes.

WEST Australian police say they're baffled by the shooting death of a man whose family described as a harmless person who had worked and lived for the surf.

David Liam Johnson, 32, was found dead at the weekend with a gunshot wound to his head at a park in the Perth beachside suburb of Swanbourne.

Police, who are treating the death as a murder, said today they had ruled out the involvement of bikies, but were at a loss in finding a motive for the shooting.

Mr Johnson was known in the Mandurah and Fremantle areas, but had no fixed address.

Commissioner Karl O'Callaghan told Fairfax radio on Thursday that the case remained a mystery.

"The only thing I can tell you is that in the briefing note I've got ... it's not related to bikie activity,'' Mr O'Callagan said.

Mr Johnson's family have pleaded for anyone with information about his death to contact police, saying he was a free spirit who worked to support his love of surfing and would never have hurt anybody.

"And that's why I think it doesn't make any sense from a motive perspective - I think we're still fairly baffled about it,'' Mr O'Callaghan said

SOMETIMES, inventions are revolutionary.

When the iPhone debuted in 2007, the world let out a collective gasp, as if to say, "Yes, that's just what I've been wanting!"

In Japan, there's a whole category for such creations called chindogu: inventions that seem clever on paper, but in practice are completely ridiculous.

A MISSING nine-year-old Swan View boy who had not been seen since yesterday afternoon has been found safe and well.

Isaac Johnson was found by a member of the public on a street in Stratton about 8.25am today. He was last seen in Talbot Road in Swan View about 4.40pm yesterday.

Police search for missing Kimberley teen, 15

Dampier Peninsula Police are also searching for a missing disabled indigenous boy aged 15 who has gone missing in the vicinity of La Djadarr Bay, about 140km north of Broome on the Dampier Peninsula.

The youth has an intellectual disability and Police hold concerns for his welfare due to the difficult terrain and high temperatures in the area.

The boy was last seen wearing a blue t-shirt and black shorts.

Police used a helicopter and boat with the assistance of Bardi Rangers and Nyul Nyul Rangers, to conduct a search of the area where he was last seen.

The search stopped about 6.30pm last night due to lack of light.

The search recommenced this morning at 5.30am, and will use Police, Rangers, SES Volunteers and Derby Volunteer Marine Rescue. A helicopter will assist with an air search and boats will search the marshlands.

Man charged after wild police chase, crash

POLICE were forced to abort a chase through the streets of Belmont last night shortly before the car they were chasing slammed into another vehicle.

The unmarked police car was doing patrols in Belmont last night just before 11pm when they noticed a Black Mercedes Benz which had been stolen during a burglary in Albany on Sunday.

Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, however it will be alleged the vehicle failed to stop and officers began to pursue it.

The stolen vehicle drove at high speed and in a dangerous manner forcing the officers to abort the pursuit for safety reasons.

A short time later at the corner of Fisher Street and Alexander Street it will be alleged the stolen car failed to give way to a vehicle and crashed into it causing extensive damage to both cars.

The driver and passenger of the stolen vehicle attempted to flee on foot.

Officers managed to take the passenger into custody however the driver could not be located.

The police Dog Squad was called to the scene where police dog “Rumble” picked up a scent at a unit about 300m from the crash site.

A call was made about releasing the dog into the unit at which point a man, who police will allege was the driver of the stolen car, came out of hiding.

A 27-year-old man from Gnowangerup, about 360km south-east of Perth, has been charged with stealing a motor vehicle, reckless driving and failing to stop.

He will appear in the Perth Magistrates Court today.
