SOME 150 construction workers have walked off the job at the Mundaring Water Treatment site in Perth's Hills region after a near miss with a runaway truck.
The Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) of Western Australia said members elected on Monday to down tools at the Brookfield Multiplex-operated site after the potentially deadly incident on Saturday.
The union alleged the brakes failed on the heavy duty truck and said workers were lucky not to have been killed or injured.
The truck came to rest in a ditch.
CFMEU boss Joe McDonald, who was today appointed national president of the union, said there had been a spate of safety incidents on the site and the latest was "the last straw''.
"We have called for all vehicles and equipment to be checked thoroughly on the site,'' he said.
Water from the plant will be used for the Goldfields and Agricultural Water Supply Scheme.
