Newman to fight nightclub assault charge

WEST Coast's rising AFL star Murray Newman will plead not guilty to a charge of grievous bodily harm after an incident at a Northbridge nightclub.

Newman, 18, was charged after a fight in November at the Library Nightclub in Perth's Northbridge entertainment district that allegedly left a man with facial injuries so severe he needed surgery.

In Perth Magistrates Court Newman's lawyer indicated he would plead not guilty to the charge.

He would also try to have the charge downgraded.

Newman was released on bail and will next appear in court in June.

At a previous hearing, Newman was barred from entering any nightclub and not allowed on any licensed premises after 11.30pm (WST). Newman also posted $10,000 bail with a $10,000 surety and vowed not to contact or go within 50m of the alleged victim.

At the time he was charged, the Eagles said they were ``bitterly disappointed'' with Murray, who played four games in his debut season for the club, kicking three goals.

His off-season has not improved since. He was beaten by 44-year-old John Worsfold in two 2km running time-trials in the days after his arrest.

Teacher charged with sexual assault

A TEACHER has been charged with sexually assaulting a 13-year-old student last year.

The 29-year-old Nedlands man was investigated by the Child Abuse Squad, who charged him with eight offences.

Police will allege the man was employed as a teacher at a southern suburbs primary school and committed four counts of indecent dealings with a child between 13 and 16 by a person in authority, and four counts of procuring a child between 13 and 16 to do an indecent act.

He will appear before the Fremantle Magistrates Court on March 12.

Man charged over 1990s sex assault

A ROCKINGHAM man has been charged over a sex assault which allegedly took place in the early 1990s.

Police allege that the man, now aged 66, was working as an education officer for the Department of Community Services when he sexually assaulted a 13 year old boy.

The man has been charged with aggravated sexual assault and will appear in Perth's Magistrate's Court on Thursday March 7.

Between April 1990 and June 1991, the alleged offender was in charge of a school and work transition program at Warminda on Welshpool Road in East Victoria Park.

A POPULAR toy has been cited in an assault.

Ashley Trimmer allegedly threw a Furby, the Hasbro toys with "a mind of their own", at her partner in a fight, Huffington Post reported.

Police told CBS Pittsburgh that the 27-year-old Pennsylvania woman, from Moon Township, became upset over a Facebook post by her boyfriend William Ley.

A physical fight ensued and Trimmer allegedly struck Ley in the head with a Furby toy and a Sony Playstation controller, cutting one side of his face, The Smoking Gun reported.

Ashley Trimmer was charged by police with a misdemeanor simple assault charge in connection with the fight.

She was released after her mother posted $2000 bail.

In cases of domestic assault that result in injury, officers are required to make an arrest no matter how minor the harm, Moon police Chief Leo McCarthy told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
